WAR AGAINST HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Women Artists Rock (WAR) is a series of events that bring together female musicians, visual artists, film makers, and activists who want to change the world. The women of WAR believe that it is possible for art to make a difference, and they aim to raise awareness of issues that affect us all and to inspire the public to activist activity.
Presented by Cantus Pennatus and co-sponsored by the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan and the American Jewish Service Committee, the first WAR event will take place on April 22, 2008.
This event will raise awareness of the horrific affects of human trafficking on individuals and global politics. It features speeches by several activists who work to combat sexual slavery, including representatives from the New York Police Department, Israeli Consulate, the German State Police of North Westphalia, Turkish National Police, TraCCC (Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center) and the Dutch Consulate.
Participating visual artists include: Adi Ezroni, who was held hostage by the Cambodian and Vietnamese governments and the Chinese mafia for two weeks during the filming of Holly, her film about a child sold into sexual slavery; Eva Horstick-Schmitt, a photographer who documented trafficking in Kosovo with the 2490 Project, up-and-coming young artists Jessica Levy; Grace Melier and Janelle Sing.
Brooke Bryant, a noted rock and classical musician, will host the event and perform with several guest musicians, including Fran Cathcart, a Grammy-winning producer and guitarist.
